How to Prepare Shirt Artwork That Prints Cleanly

A shirt can carry a business logo, a team name, a favorite photo, or a message that means everything to a family. Knowing how to prepare shirt artwork helps that idea arrive on fabric looking intentional, readable, and ready to wear – not blurry, too small, or different from what you pictured.

You do not need to be a designer to create a great custom shirt. A clear phone photo, an existing logo, or even a rough concept can be enough to get started. The key is giving your printer the best possible source material and making a few practical decisions before production begins.

Start with the best version of your artwork

The artwork you send is the foundation for the finished shirt. If you have a business logo, use the original file from the designer whenever possible. A vector file, such as AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF, is usually the strongest option for logos because it can be resized without becoming fuzzy.

If your design is a photo, use the original image from your phone or camera rather than a screenshot, social media download, or image copied from a website. Those smaller versions may look fine on a screen but can lose detail when enlarged for a full-front print.

For raster artwork, including JPG, PNG, and PSD files, aim for at least 300 pixels per inch at the size you want printed. A 12-inch-wide front design should ideally be around 3,600 pixels wide. Larger files give the production team more flexibility. A low-resolution file cannot always be repaired without changing its appearance, especially when it contains faces, small lettering, or fine lines.

For most adult shirts, a full-front graphic often falls around 10 to 12 inches wide, though the right dimensions depend on the garment size, design shape, and intended placement. A left-chest logo is much smaller, commonly around 3 to 4 inches wide. Youth shirts, ladies’ fitted styles, and smaller garments require additional adjustment so the artwork remains balanced instead of oversized.

Leave breathing room around the artwork

If you are using a photo, crop it with purpose. Make sure faces are not cut off at the chin or forehead, and avoid placing key details where folds or seams may interrupt the image. Match your file to the right print method

Not every shirt design needs the same production method. The best approach depends on the artwork, garment, quantity, durability needs, and deadline.

Digital printing is often a strong fit for full-color photos, detailed artwork, and one-off or small-run shirts. It allows smooth color blends and works well when every shirt needs a different name, image, or message. Heat transfers can also produce colorful, detailed designs and are useful for quick-turn orders, specialty materials, and flexible placement options.

Screen printing can be an excellent choice for larger orders with simpler spot-color artwork, particularly when you are printing the same design on many shirts. Embroidery is better for polos, hats, jackets, and workwear logos that need texture and a polished, dimensional finish. Very small lettering, photo gradients, and highly detailed illustrations may not translate well to thread, so artwork may need to be simplified for embroidery.

Confirm placement before production

Check image cropping, shirt color, artwork size, and placement. If the proof includes multiple garment sizes or colors, verify that the design is appropriate for each one.

Pay close attention to these four details:

• Spelling and punctuation, especially on names, memorial messages, and event dates.
• Small text and fine lines that may need to be enlarged or simplified.
• Backgrounds that should be transparent rather than printed as a rectangle.
• Color contrast between the artwork and every garment color in the order.
